It’s dynamic composition, harmonious palette and deft application of paint is no accident. They come from the hand of an experienced artist who has internalized the elements of art, knows the possibilities of his materials and has confidence in his concepts. His process becomes intuitive and responsive, allowing for constant experimentation. An artist in this position often produces masterful work as I see here.
by Naoko Morisawa 2nd Place Award “Big Love That All You Need” is in your face and you can’t deny its presence. I liked it at first but it took time to get comfortable with it. The use of common objects as a medium, here garden hose and zip ties, once understood had me engaged. I could then deal with it’s technique, texture, form, line and intent. This was not a big leap to being comfortable and admiring this imaginative, creative and challenging work of art!
by Marie-Ange Ackad 3rd Place Winner Juror's comments ”Eating Cake” combines the image of a mouth painted over digital print on canvas then all coated with encaustic. The interesting juxtaposition of truncated facial features floating over a graphic background got and he’d my attention. Great concept well executed. I’d like to see more work by this artist.
by Liz Walker Fourth Place Award Juror's Comment: This artist’s technique intrigues me. She pealed dry pieces acrylic paint off her palette and collaged them to form the core of a figure on a partially painted background. Creating this very interesting start, she then by painting, brings out the features, stance and form. I always enjoy painterly abstract figurative when executed this well.
by Judy Nigh Merit Award Juror's Comment I have to say I saw this painting a year or so ago in an exhibition and was impressed as a spectator. Now, as a juror, I can say how much I enjoy this mono -chrome value painting. The soft lost edges are contrasted beautifully with a few, controlled hard edges and line. The background is not incidental; the background is a complete lively environment worthy of investigation.
The Three disGraces: Exaggeration, Disinformation, and Obfuscation
by Rick Rogers Merit Award Winner Juror's Comment: I’m at home here. The artist’s control of chosen media is masterful. The rectilinear structure is orderly with everything in it’s place. Then curvilinear, and amorphous forms intrude. This begs investigation and deciphering, a piece to spend some time with.
by Patti Sevensma Merit Award Juror Comment: “Ribbons of Light” is an apropos title digital image created with a camera and printed on aluminum. I like it’s feel of “painting” and beautiful palette. It’s luscious color, sensuous forms and dancing lines absorb me in a cool aqua atmosphere. Those qualities got and held my attention through the selection process.
by Chris Warot Merit Award Juror's Comment: I responded to this piece’s bright colors controlled by a dynamic composition that keeps the eye moving. The swirling passages and rhythmic staccato movements of competently applied color fields embraced by masterful black brush work is the work of an experienced artists who has found their voice.
